Phil Collins (né le 30 janvier 1951 à Chiswick dans le borough londonien de Hounslow, en Angleterre) est un auteur-compositeur-interprète, acteur et producteur britannique. Connu en tant que batteur et chanteur du groupe Genesis, il a eu une carrière solo prolifique, de 1981 à 1996, il mène en parallèle ces deux carrières. C'est également un musicien accompli qui joue de plusieurs instruments: la batterie et les percussions sont ses instruments de base, mais il joue aussi des claviers, de la guitare et de la basse.
Bercé par les rythmes soul et doo-wop des groupes Motown et par la pop des Beatles, Phil Collins commence sa carrière professionnelle de batteur en 1968, au sein du groupe Freehold avec lequel il produit un single Lying, Crying, Dying/The Sandman, Par la suite, il fonde un autre groupe, d'abord nommé Hickory, avec son ami Ronnie Caryl à la guitare, Brian Chatton aux claviers et Gordon Smith à la basse. Le groupe change ensuite de nom pour Flaming Youth et publie un album intitulé Ark 2. Malgré quelques apparitions télé et des critiques favorables, Flaming Youth se sépare en 1970. Peu de temps après, Phil Collins devient membre de Genesis, groupe de rock progressif fondé en 1967. À l'origine uniquement batteur et choriste de la formation, c'est à la suite du départ en 1975 du chanteur Peter Gabriel que Phil Collins devient par défaut, en 1976, la voix de Genesis. Le groupe s'adjoint un deuxième batteur pour les tournées (Bill Bruford en 1976, Chester Thompson à partir de 1977, et son propre fils Nicholas Collins à partir de 2020). À partir des succès tels que Follow You Follow Me en 1978, Genesis, réduit à un trio, connaît sa plus grande période de réussite commerciale jusqu'au début des années 1990. Encensé par le triomphe de sa carrière solo, il se détache de son poste au sein du groupe en 1996, dans lequel il est brièvement remplacé par Ray Wilson. Toutefois, Genesis se reforme avec Phil Collins en 2007 pour une grande tournée mondiale.
À partir de cette année, Phil Collins connaît des problèmes de santé depuis qu'il s'est blessé à la colonne vertébrale, ce qui l'empêche de jouer de la batterie. Après avoir annoncé sa retraite, il revient sur le devant de la scène en 2016. De 2017 à 2019, il repart en tournée avec son fils Nicholas. À l'automne 2021, Genesis est de retour avec la tournée The Last Domino? Tour, la dernière de la carrière de Phil Collins qui chante assis sur une chaise, accompagné par son fils Nicholas à la batterie. Le 23 avril 2018, il publie son autobiographie intitulée Not dead yet, dans laquelle il se livre simplement en faisant un retour sur sa carrière.
Ses chansons ayant connu le plus de succès sont: In the Air Tonight, Against All Odds, Another Day in Paradise, One More Night, Easy Lover, Something Happened on the Way to Heaven, Do You Remember?, Two Hearts, Take Me Home, Sussudio.
Phil Collins est récompensé par sept Grammy Awards, un Oscar et deux Golden Globes. Il a son étoile sur le Hollywood Walk of Fame. ...
