A la grande désapprobation de son mari, Kate Barker encourage ses enfants à piller les troncs d’églises. Lorsque le jeune Herman est arrêté pour avoir dévalisé une attraction foraine, le shérif local chasse la famille de la ville. Quelques années plus tard, « Ma » et ses fils figurent en tête de liste des gangsters les plus recherchés des Etats Unis, lesquels, tels Mitraillette Kelly ou Alvin Karpis n’hésitent pas à s’associer avec le désormais redouté gang Barker.
