Trois amis fans d'astronomie cherchent le point d'impact de ce qu'ils croient être une météorite. Quand des curieux rassemblés autour d'un cratère formé par la chute d'un objet cylindrique sont tués par un « Rayon Ardent » projeté par un tripode gigantesque, ils comprennent qu’ils sont au cœur d’une invasion extraterrestre qui se dirige vers Londres en désintégrant tout sur son passage.
