Prudence, jeune fille de l'aristocratie anglaise, s'est engagée dans l'armée. Un soir, elle fait la connaissance du jeune Clive Briggs, d'un milieu social très différent du sien. Prudence accepte d'aller passer la permission du jeune homme avec lui, au bord de la mer. Il est peu loquace sur son passé.
