Dans un club branché de Los Angeles, Susan fait la rencontre de Nicole. Très vite, l'amitié s'installe entre les deux femmes. Au cours de la conversation, Susan apprend que Nicole doit bientôt être opérée. Comme elle ne bénéficie pas d'une bonne assurance maladie, Susan lui propose d'échanger leur identité. Nicole accepte. Une fois hospitalisée, elle est rapidement opérée, mais un incident survient pendant l'intervention, assez grave pour lui coûter la vie.
