États-Unis, années 1930. Mildred Burke travaille comme serveuse et élève seule son enfant. Inspirée par les modèles que représentent Eleanor Roosevelt et Amelia Earhart, elle rêve, elle aussi, de marquer l'histoire. Un soir, alors qu’elle assiste pour la première fois à un match de catch à Kansas City, elle a une illumination : sa destinée est de combattre sur le ring. Bien que ce sport soit alors largement interdit aux femmes, elle convainc le célèbre Billy Wolfe de l’entraîner. Leur relation professionnelle devient rapidement amoureuse. Par sa nature tumultueuse toutefois, celle-ci fragilise sa carrière.
