Le médecin Rob Cole retourne en Angleterre pour y introduire les connaissances médicales de l'Orient, mais se heurte aux intrigues de médecins locaux établis qui se sentent menacés par ce savoir nouveau. Le film se déroule au XIe siècle et suit Rob Cole alors qu'il se bat pour la vie de ses patients et la reconnaissance de ses méthodes, naviguant entre les secrets du corps humain et les mystères de l'âme.
