Dans une réalité alternative aux alentours de 1985, le Président Ferris F. Fremont (avatar de Richard Nixon ?) est toujours à la Maison Blanche et pourchasse une organisation terroriste occulte du nom d'Aramcheck. Au nom de la sécurité, les U.S.A. sont devenus un état policier. Un disquaire de Berkeley, Nick Brady, commence à avoir des visions en provenance de Dieu, ou d'extraterrestres. Il s'embarque dans une machination pour renverser le gouvernement avec l'aide d'une mystérieuse femme, Silvia, et de son meilleur ami, écrivain de science-fiction (K. Dick ?)...
