En 1912, dans les Highlands Ecossaises, la vie n'est décidément pas tendre avec Mary MacDhui. Orpheline de mère, elle perd ainsi sa chatte, Thomasina, auprès de laquelle elle avait pourtant reporté tout son amour. Son père, vétérinaire inconsolable depuis la mort de sa femme et incapable de réconforter sa fille, ne parvient pas en effet à sauver l'animal grièvement blessé. Mais Thomasina, adoptée par une mystérieuse sorcière réfugiée dans les bois, ressuscite de sa "première" vie...
