En 1782, le jeune député William Wilberforce est exhorté et décidé à faire abolir la traite négrière en Grande-Bretagne. Malgré son impopularité à la Chambre des communes, il poursuit son combat jusqu'à ce que sa santé le pousse à se tourner entièrement vers l'évangélisme. Quinze ans plus tard, son mariage avec Barbara Spooner, une femme animée du même sens de la justice, l'encourage à reprendre son combat.
