Edgar Marsh est un libraire timide et angoissé, qui vit seul dans une grande maison sur la rue Morgue à Paris. Son seul ami est son contraire, un bourreau des cœurs, Carl. Edgar tombe amoureux d’une belle jeune femme qui a emménagé en face de chez lui, Betty. Mais celle-ci tombe amoureuse de Carl. Quand Edgar s’en aperçoit, il est pris de fureur.
