Belle est une jeune fille de douze ans qui vient de perdre sa mère dans un accident de voiture. Elle entretient des rapports conflictuels avec son père Cody, un vétérinaire, à qui elle reproche la mort de sa mère. Belle ne supporte pas non plus qu'il doive parfois euthanasier certains animaux. Cody décide d'envoyer sa fille chez son grand-père, éleveur de chiens. C'est un petit chiot, Atticus, qui va alors bouleverser la vie de toute la famille...
