Dans l'Amérique des années 30, Sonora Webster, une adolescente fugueuse, décroche un emploi au sein de Doc Carver, une troupe de cascadeurs itinérants. Elle y effectue un travail de nettoyage, mais son ambition est de participer au show en tant que plongeuse à cheval. Ce rêve fou devient bientôt réalité, mais un terrible accident prive la jeune fille de la vue. Inspiré d'une histoire vraie.
