John Doe est un homme accusé d'être un serial killer justicier. Le film se déroule en parallèle du procès, des flashbacks cherche à mettre en évidence les raisons. Ces dernières partagent l'opinon publique. Tout au long de son incarcération, un groupe de justicier appelé "Speak for the Dead" apparait en soutient à John Doe élevant ainsi le débat entre les notions de Justice et de Vengeance.
