À la mort de son riche père, Kay décide de réaliser son rêve le plus cher : contrôler le parti républicain. Dans ce but, elle retrouve un ancien flirt qui, à sa grande déception, est marié. De son côté, grisé par le succès qu'obtiennent ses discours, Grant en viendrait à oublier son idéal si sa femme, Mary, ne le secouait vivement.
