Fraîchement arrivé à Londres et sans un sou après s'être fait dévaliser, Adams, un jeune Américain se demande comment survivre. Au moment où il se penche pour ramasser une brioche qu'un gamin vient de jeter, un majordome lui ouvre la porte d'une riche demeure. Deux vieux messieurs, les frères Monpelier, lui remettent une coupure unique d'un million de livres. Il peut l'utiliser pendant un mois. Et si au terme de ce delai, Adams la restitue intacte, sa fortune sera faite.
