1869, au cœur de l'Afrique. Le docteur David Livingston disparaît après avoir été témoin du massacre d'un village. Le New York Herald Publisher envoie à sa recherche Henry Morton Stanley, l'un de ses plus brillants journalistes. Stanley finit par retrouver Livingston et se joint à son expédition. Ensemble, ils vont tenter de découvrir les sources du Nil. A travers des territoires inexplorés, abritant mille dangers, ils se lancent dans le plus périlleux des voyages.
