La famille Smith vit à Williamsburgh, en Virginie. Rob, le mari, est policier, Debbie, son épouse, s'occupe de leurs deux enfants. Un matin, alors que Rob a travaillé de nuit et qu'il dort à l'étage, Debbie est victime d'un viol, sans que personne ne s'en aperçoive, ni que son mari entende quoi que ce soit. A partir de ce jour, leur vie est bouleversée. Parallèlement, le directeur du laboratoire de médecine légale attire l'attention des autorités sur les problèmes liés au manque de lois et de moyens en faveur de la recherche des tests ADN, épaulé par une féministe du Congrès, Carolyn Maloney.
