Alfred Rott, un architecte brillant et acariâtre, se lance dans une commande très inhabituelle pour un milliardaire excentrique de Malte qui se fait appeler le "Grand Duc de Corse". Une épidémie mortelle de malaria s'abat sur l'île et sème la panique, mais Alfred reste pour terminer son travail.
