Dans le Sud tunisien, à Sfax, Mattéo s’éprend de Safia, une prostituée. Ils s’installent ensemble et vivent heureux. Safia tombe enceinte. Mattéo, pour gagner l’argent nécessaire à son futur enfant, s’engage dans une affaire de contrebande. Safia le croit mort. Désemparée, elle accepte la proposition de mariage d’André Chervin, riche collectionneur, qui l’emmène à Paris. Trois ans plus tard, Mattéo réapparaît. Sa présence met en danger l’équilibre du couple…
