Matthew Harris est simple brancardier dans un hôpital de province. Situation déplaisante au possible pour sa vanité, qu'il pense enfin pouvoir dépasser, lorsque le docteur Simon Hennessey est victime d'un dramatique accident de voiture. Il emprunte donc son identité et se retrouve bientôt nommé dans un hôpital de Bristol. Malgré sa maigre connaissance de la chose médicale, il parvient, grâce à la complicité amoureuse d'une infirmière, à se débrouiller. Mais le destin se révèle contre lui...
