Huckleberry Finn est un garçon de 15 ans qui entretient depuis longtemps une relation difficile avec son père, souvent violent. Lorsque son père tente de le kidnapper, Huck décide de s'enfuir de chez lui et quitte la ville sur un radeau. Huck est bientôt rejoint par Jim, un esclave en fuite qui n'est pas plus impatient de voir son maître que Huck ne l'est de voir son père. Alors que les deux amis descendent le Mississippi, ils sont confrontés à de nombreux défis et aventures.
