L'Empire romain a occupé Britannia pendant quatre siècles, offrant protection et paix en échange de sa soumission. Les Romains ont construit le mur d'Hadrien à la frontière nord pour éloigner les Pictes, guerriers féroces et mystérieux qui se peignaient en bleu. Mais au Ve siècle, les Romains partirent, laissant les Britanniques se débrouiller seuls sous la direction du roi Vortigern.
