En Israël, une mission scientifique conjointe franco-israélienne doit percer les secrets de la colline de Kiryath-Jearim (ou Kiryat Ya'arim), convertie en site d'un couvent catholique, où, selon la Bible, l'Arche d'Alliance a été conservée pendant au moins vingt ans avant d'être amenée à Jérusalem par le roi David, père du roi Salomon, qui construira finalement le Saint des Saints à l'intérieur du Premier Temple pour l'abriter.
