Arnold enchante les foules d'un cabaret new-yorkais, travesti en chanteuse sous le nom de Virginia Hamm. Juif et homosexuel, il a du mal à faire accepter à sa mère les fantaisies de son mode de vie. Un soir, il rencontre Ed, son premier véritable amour. Mais celui-ci s'avère être un bisexuel qui le partage avec une femme ! Un an plus tard, Arnold se console dans les bras d'Alan, jeune amant tendre, jusqu'à un nouveau bouleversement...
